From Drifting to Progression in Life

Yeswanth Varma·

Personal transformation journey beginning in March 2017 when the author could not fit into an XL shirt. This moment sparked his decision to change his life, establishing a clear why -- personal control and self-improvement rather than external pressure.

Starting at 245 pounds, the author joined Planet Fitness and adopted a lifestyle-focused approach rather than restrictive diets. Lost 60 pounds over 14 months, eventually fitting into medium-sized clothing.

A key element of motivation involved surprising his parents with his physical transformation. He credits this emotional connection to his goal as crucial for maintaining persistence.

After achieving fitness goals, he noticed himself drifting back toward comfort zones. A colleague introduced him to outdoor running and trail races, leading to participation in ultramarathon events. He met Dean Karnazes, an ultramarathon runner, which fundamentally shifted his perspective on endurance.

Within months, he progressed from 10K races to completing multiple marathons and 50K runs. By 2018, he had run over 1000 miles. He later transitioned to biking and completed a 100-mile bike ride within six months.

Key principles: understanding your why, maintaining consistency, setting emotional goals, and recognizing that growth involves cyclical progress with setbacks. His mission, #betorchbearer, aims to inspire others toward their goals.
